In the east it borders on Saxony and in the south and west on Thuringia. The Burgenland district is the southernmost district in Saxony-Anhalt. Many Romanesque and Gothic churches, old manor houses and windmills in almost every village are stone witnesses to the thousand-year history of settlement in the Burgenland district.
