In almost every village in the Burgenland district there are buildings that bear witness to the approximately thousand-year history of settlement. Among them are many Romanesque and Gothic churches, old manor houses and windmills. In the east it borders on Saxony and in the south and west on Thuringia. There is also Neu-Augustusburg Castle in the town of Weißenfels. The landscape is hilly and is shaped by the Saale, Unstrut and Weißer Elster. The cultural highlights of the Burgenland district are the district town of Naumburg (Saale) with the Naumburg Cathedral, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
