The Burgenland district has many cultural highlights. Among them is the district town of Naumburg (Saale) with the Naumburg Cathedral, which has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The city of Nebra became known worldwide. The Nebra Sky Disk, approximately 3700 to 4000 years old, was found nearby. In the east it borders on Saxony and in the south and west on Thuringia. Many Romanesque and Gothic churches, old manor houses and windmills in almost every village are stone witnesses to the thousand-year history of settlement in the Burgenland district. The hilly landscape is shaped by the rivers Saale, Unstrut and Weißer Elster.
